Martinez - restructured layers - Interview

Titelmotiv -

Out of Orbit her kennt.

Was verschlug dich ins dänische Kopenhagen?

---------------- english version / original ----------------

You are swedish. What was the reason for your move to Kopenhagen?
Copenhagen was the nearest big city to Helsingborg were I grew up in Sweden. Helsingborg is a small city which is just on the other side of the water from Denmark, not more then a 45 minute trip from Copenhagen actually. My mother is from there and I always had a strong connection and vibe with the city, so for me it was pretty natural to move there since I wanted to go to a bigger city for a more open minded music climate. I also had a lot of friends in Copenhagen. The move really opened up a lot of possibilities for and inspired me a lot with my music productions and DJ life.

On your 18th Birthday you performed at the Stockholm Filmfestival with some of the F-Com guys (Jori Hulkkonen, Llorca und Elegia). Is there any kind of relation?
No not really. I played in this party since John a great friend of mine was in charge of the booking of that event. I'm still really thankful for that opportunity!! It was a pretty cool gig and gave me some recognition in stockholm which was great. I also got to know the producer and good friend Manuel Perez who later on help me a lot with getting started with my music production and was sort of my mentor for producing.

Who or what had the most influences on you in case of producing?
Getting to know Manuel Perez was a great influence on me. He showed me a lot of things about how to make music.

In many biographies of scandinavian artists the roskilde festival is marked as a important step (milestone) in musical carreer. Which importance does it have for electronic music at present (last two years)?
I think Roskiled Festival is more rock and pop oriented. Although they've had some pretty cool DJ and electronic live acts in the past years I think it not really that important for the electronic music in denmark. My feeling is that they could definitely do much more for the electronic music then they do now. Sure its a thing to be able to perform there, but I think festivals like Fusion & Sun Moon and Star in Germany is much more important for a electronic-music artist then Roskilde!

Many of the admitted DJs produced MixCDs in the near past. A trend for image care? Whats your point of view?
Hmm... I don't think has anything to do with image, cause that would just be such a lame reason to produce a mix album that it would show all the way and it would be totally un-interesting. I think its more a way for many DJ's to go to another level then just playing in the club. Its a way to present you DJ/Mix set in a different enviroment then at a club. With a mix album you can present yourself as a DJ in a more artistic way, i think.

Which intension do you follow in producing a mix CD?
I wanted to present the Out of Orbit sound on a CD and I wanted it to be something a bit special and not just a CD with the 15 most famous songs from the labels catalogue on there. So my intension was to bring the sound of the label to people in a mixed format but still presenting something new. By mixing small pieces and parts of each song into a full-length mix CD i created a new sound and something different for the listener which for me was the perfect way to present the labels sound on a CD.

What about the feedback of your “triple o” artists on your mixCD? Are they satisfied about the recombination or have they to shut up? ;o)
hehe.. the general response have been very cool and satisfying! :)

The big minimal-deal/consent, does this discussion concern you in your own produtions?
I don't really understand that question. But what I think your after is that I don't think too much about genres when I produce. I just make the sound and the feeling I'm on that day when I'm in the studio!

Correct me if i go wrong...your last deep-house release was in early 2005 (“antares ep”) or more classic, the good old Deeplay releases (til 2004). Thats 2 years and a lot of releases and remixes ago, is there a chance to hear such classic deep and jazzy house stuff from you in the near future or is that a closed file in your musical carreer?
You never know!?! But honestly that kind of music is not what I find most inspiring at the moment. I think also the deep-house is cool but the more jazzy stuff I left behind, i found my self not developing as much with this sound as I do with the more Techno oriented stuff!

There are some whispers that Get Physical had a focus on you?! What can we expect from you in 2007?
Hmm.. ok, I didn't know that.. hehe I have to ask them then! :) For 2007 there will be a more releases on Out of Orbit, we'll focus on our sound there and also I will start a sub-label for my more minimal and techno oriented productions. There is also a 12 inch release on my mate Martin Decara's label 3rd Floor scheduled for Feb/March 07. As well as world tour for the Restructured Layers CD including gigs in Japan, Brazil, Australia and of course all over Europe.. so see you out there! ;o)
